Support the Climate 9

On June 14th, the Climate9 will be tried for Vandalism and Breach of the Peace.

To support the Climate9 we set up the Climate9 Defence Committee.  This is a wide group of organisations and individuals who support the actions of anti-aviation campaigners who took direct action against airport expansion in Aberdeen in March 2009. These 9 activists now face a court case which could get them years in prison.

We believe that the Climate9 should be rewarded for their actions and not punished. If you agree that climate change is an urgent threat which is already costing lives and destroying the ecosystems that support us, and that those in power need a radical wake-up call, please join us to stand up for those who are doing just that.  Check out the support section of this site.  We also need as many statements of support as possible. Write one for yourself or your organisation now.

I am more than happy to support your cause and the right to protest especially in the light of the times that we live in. Also, given the current situation of volcanic ash forcing flights to be cancelled and people having to make other arrangements to travel, shows that the world really does not grind to a stop. However, if we continue to destroy our planet in so many ways as well as excess plane travel the world will eventually grind to a stop!

Good luck and wishes being sent to you all.

I want to give all my solidarity to this extremely brave group of people who challenged the economic interests and the established powers in the name of a better and healthy life. I wish we could have such people in my hometown as well. We need persons like them.

the fact that people are willing to risk their own liberty in order to raise awareness of this issue should be proof enough that this problem goes beyond the remit of the civil court system – this is a global issue (and as one of the lucky few first world economies who are primarily responsible for the problem) it is one which our government has a responsibility to face up to. Any attempt to sweep these protests under the carpet via the judicial system must be stopped. These are intelligent, responsible people making valuable contributions to their community and country – their opinions should be heard, not punished.

Please add my support to your efforts to draw attention to the way governments exploit people through their economic policies. There is also untrammelled use of non renewables like oil and gas that companies are able to use without sufficent regard for our natural resources and the wild life that has no choice in what happens to them. It is time to put other policies in place to safeguard future generations.

Well done the climate 9, it was very brave of you all to risk imprisonment in the way you did to tackle climate chage and stop another atrocious airport expansion. I also like the irony of the golf course that was set up in protest. I was also really shocked to discover that every single scottish airport is set to expand, so consequently so it’s a delight to see real opposition towards expansion, and I find it comforting to know each airport expansion will be vigerously opposed in turn. After reading about the Aberdeen case I know there are people out there who can, and will, make a huge difference so keep up the good fight knowing you’ll be one of the few people able to say “the world is a much better place because I got out there and my activism made a difference.”
Reading about you people valiently defending the climate, like you did, is an inspiration to me.
Keep up the good work and I wish you the best of luck with the court case, furthermore I know I and my future children owe you all a debt of gratitude. (I’m only 17 an will live in the world for many years to come.)
    Love from Stephen Clarke
p.s. I’d like to get out there and help your cause but while I’m with my parents I can’t. (not allowed.)
